Letterpress Love

I'm so excited!! Over the weekend I purchased a wee little Letterpress, The Excelsior Kelsey 5x8 Victory. For being at least 100 years old this little guy is in awesome shape. I was pretty lucky to find it right here in Portland, Oregon even, Yay! I'm taking some baby steps to grow my card business ( I have a line of cards on Snapfish currently) but I'll be expanding wedding this year...stay tuned. For now, I just can't wait to start printing!!!

I've also joined this sweet little group called the Ladies of Letterpress, dedicated to the position that a woman's place is in the print shop. So if you are also a woman with a press I'de check them out!

Letter to Jane

ABOUT DESIGNS OF THE YEAR

The nominated designs fall into seven categories - architecture, digital, fashion, furniture, graphics, product and transport. They can be designed by a practice, team or individual. One Laptop Per Child

Fuseproject has done it again, working with One Lap Top Per Child they have created a laptop that brings education through the power of technology. It's a great program and the design is simple, affordable to produce and pretty cute, and the solar cover option can house a solar panel combined with internal batteries for outdoor or indoor charging. Sweet!

“With more than 2.4 million children in 25 countries received the original XO Laptop, and these kids have been our inspiration to create the next generation of this educational tool. One Laptop Per Child is a technology story about how to provide low-‐cost educational tools to millions of children. I love Instagram. I've only been using it for a little while and it's awesome.
Before the holiday I was looking back to this blogs original posts and realized that I wrote a lot of poetry. I've always written poems, I'm not a very good speller, but I do like to write :)
So I decided to put the two things together and have created Pictures & Words, a weekly posting of my favorite Instagram shots put together with an original quote or short poem.

My process:
1. Print out photos on archival paper
2. Write poems directly on the print outs using my trusty White Uniball pen and my black 01 Micron pen
3. Mount to thick artboard
4. Sometime I might put a magnet on the back
5. I'm going to try Arlene's Paper Glaze on a few of them (waiting for that to come in the mail) to see how that looks.
6. Post to a dedicated page for your viewing pleasure.
7. Do it every week.
8. Maybe write poems for my friends who use instagram too.

Jambox

Jambox by Jawbone is a pretty cool little speaker device designed by Yves Behar of Fuseproject. Made to work with any Bluetooth device you choose from the iPad to your mobile phone, the Jambox allows users to share music, movies and games: while also serving as a pitch-perfect mobile speaker phone which is a nice alternative to some of those clunky conference call gadgets.

They’ve created a limited version of the Jambox (yellow) to support Charity:water , with $50 from each purchase going towards the cause.

As for the sound?

Musical Microwave

Musical microwaves will be launching this year! Del Campo Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi, Argentina are the brains behind these limited edition microwaves that play songs instead of beeping when your food is ready.
The video spot introducing the product is fabulous!

These microwaves come with a usb port, (I'm thinking that's how you can choose your songs). The company produced a limited edition of a thousand microwaves which sold out immediately. So funny awesome I love it!

iheart poetics is a sweet little app trying to be developed by Seth Indigo Carnes through Kickstarter. It combines words with pictures that can then be sent to anyone for instant poetic pieces of art. I like that you can start writing and add an image later, or vise versa with the intent on creating something that evokes emotion encouraging you to be poetic, even if you think you're not.

The Shepherd's Gift

Yves Gelyen of Hornet created this lovely piece for Chobian as a reminder to give selflessly this holiday.

Snow Angel is the story about the importance of giving selflessly and the power of believing in magical things. It's a really sweet story that utilizes traditional children book illustration, animation, CG visual effects and lighting. And staying true to the story, Yves made sure no snowflakes touched, even during the CG snow production.

Started out of frustration of crappy kids tattoos, Tina Roth-Eisenberg of Swiss Miss created Tattly, a new line of temporary tattoos that are cool, designy and typographic. She reached out to some artist and designers like Julia Rothman, Stina Perrson, and Jessica Hische to name a few and ended up with some pretty fun body art...not just for kids!

Shopping Local for the Holidays

In the studio

I had a wonderful weekend shopping local at two pretty special events.
One was the Portland Bazaar, hosted by Grace Bonny from Design Sponge. This first time event was well received!

I bought two things for myself :) I tried not to but how could I pass on the CDock?!
This sweet little number was designed by James Sproul of Portland’s Hatched Goods and Adam Shearer, CD of Weinland Creative.

“ The iPhone is gently enclosed in a wood iPhone cover / charging station that transforms it into a mid-century bedside iPhone clock! The Cdock™ was never intended to alter the aesthetics of your iPhone, but rather to enhance the implied design elements already present. Because James and Adam use natural materials, each Cdock is unique. ”

I love mine! And the clock app they recommend looks so mod.

Another great little present I bought was these sweet leather clutches created by Michelle Kline of XOBRUNO. I got this lovely grey one for me and a white one with gold triangles for some one else. Her bags are really quite lovely and designed with detailed craftsmanship.

After I hit the rounds of the Bazaar, I headed over to Crafty Wonderland. That was an awesome event! It took place in the Portland convention center with so many vendors, I almost got a little overwhelmed. I had to make sure I didn't just buy for myself...because really that was the perfect place to shop for me. But I was on a mission and stuck too it. Hand made beer soap for the boys by Scrumptious Suds and even though I didn't buy the butter dish by Things Out of Stuff, I wish I would have! So weird and lovely!

That's a bleeding duck on his rump!

She makes great soap...smells so good!

Create Your Own Converse and Sell on Facebook?

There's a new Facebook campaign for Converse that will allow fans to design their own Converse, sell them to their friends and even own their own storefronts.

According to the Rubbishcorp blog, a lot of companies do "social shopping" on Facebook just by dropping their shops into the platform. "Most of these stores were totally missing the point and potential of 'social shopping' by not really bothering to engage people on Facebook as possible sales people for their brand," he writes. "Converse has some 40,000,000+ Facebook friends, a lot of which feel very passionate about the brand. They also have an awesome product in Create-- with which anyone can design their own Converse. So what if you were to enable people to sell the shoes they design to their mates on Facebook in return for stuff, like free shoes? What if you enabled people to open their own storefront on Converse's Facebook page? What if you turned the fans of a brand into the retailers?"

Well there’s an app for that! Ha ha!
Unstuck is an app for your iPad that “combines personalized digital tools with tips and know-how from a community of other people who are facing stuck moments, making it easy to get on-demand coaching whenever you need it.”

Really? That’s kinda cool, who couldn’t benefit from instant personal coaching and it's in a game-like experience, neat-o...plus the interface is simple with pretty colors. I think I need it..wait do I?

Crazy Faces

Israeli illustrator Hanoch Piven makes some fun crazy faces! His work evolved and by “accident” with his Saddam Hussein piece he developed a style that has caught the attention of many clients including: Times, Newsweek, Rolling Stones and more.

Combining found objects and sometimes food with a simple graphical style Piven creates wonderful faces that are uniquely his own. He even has an iPhone app! Sweet!

Studio H- Design, Build, Transform

I love the story of Studio H. Founders/educators Emily Pilloton and Mathew Miller are the creative minds behind the program located in Bertie County, North Carolina. They have created a curriculum that teaches high school students through a design/build of community projects. It’s a different kind of school that “sparks rural community development through a design sensibility, applied core subjects, and industry-relevant construction skills”.
So far their student’s have built some pretty cool chicken coops and a farmer’s market! It’s very inspiring to see programs like this engaging young people through design.

Cardboard Heaven

Swedish artist Nina Lindgren has created some nice pieces. Cardboard Heaven makes me want to look inside every window. It's as if there might be something or someone mulling about within each of the dwellings. This cardboard sculpture isn't little either. It scales walls at a height of 450 cm / 177 inches, quite delightful.

“In relation to many of my other works the Cardboard Heaven-sculpture tells a quiet different story with much to think about: who moved out without locking the door? Who lives on the third floor? Has someone died? Who is about to be given birth? Why are there no people? Are they asleep? Or maybe - is it just a bunch of old cardboard?”

Natural Renderings

The naturalistic work of artist Teagan White is quite lovely. This young designer is still in school but boast a client list any seasoned professional would be proud of, some of these clients include: Anthropologie, Target, WIRED, Patagonia, Nike and Coca-Cola. Most of her work appears to be created with ink and photoshop and occasionally a little gouache.

“Intricate lines, natural renderings, and subdued color are integral to her visual identity, while fascination with natural history, antiquities, and mortality drives the content of her work.”

It always amazes me to see such seasoned work from young and talented artists/designers, it's so refreshing and inspiring.

Norwegian Wild

The Norwegian Wild Reindeer Centre is the work of the design architect firm Snøhetta and created as an observation and informational centre to shelter school groups and other vistors during guided lectures of the Dovre Mountain Plateau. The views are just breathtaking all around and this modern structure fit's within the lanscape unobtrusively.

Dovrefjell is home to wild reindeer herds, musk oxen, arctic foxes and more, what a site it would be to see them roaming wild from within such a lovely structure.

"Natural, cultural and mythical landscape has formed the basis of the architectural idea. The building design is based on a rigid outer shell and an organic inner core. The south-facing exterior wall and the interior create a protected and warm gathering place, while still preserving the visitor’s view of the spectacular panorama."

Beautiful.

Snøhetta Oslo integrates the disciplines of Landscape, Interior and Architectural design.

More Than Just Candy

Candy Chang is an artist who makes cities more comfortable for people. She’s passionate about redefining the ways we share information in public space to improve our neighborhoods and our personal well-being. Her experience in design, street art, and urban planning informs many of her projects, which use public space to spark dialogue and engage citizens with their cities and with one another.
She has asks some really thought provoking questions and places them in the open for you/us to participate with. The project, Before I Die, turned the side of an abandoned house in her neighborhood in New Orleans into a giant chalkboard where residents can write on the wall and remember what is important to them. Stenciled with the sentence “Before I die I want to _______”, the wall became a space where we could learn the hopes and dreams of the people around us.

Another one of her projects, I Wish This Was came to life by the inspiration from vacant storefronts in her neighborhood. With a simple removable sticker she asked the questions, What if we could easily voice what we want, where we want it? How can we influence the businesses and services in our neighborhoods?

Combining street art and urban planning, Candy created fill-in-the-blank stickers that say “I wish this was ____.” She placed boxes of free stickers in businesses around the city and posted grids of blank stickers and a permanent marker on vacant storefronts to invite passersby to write their thoughts. Responses ranged from the functional to the poetic: I wish this was… a butcher shop, a community garden, a bike rack, an affordable farmer’s market, a Chinese restaurant, a place to sit and talk, Brad Pitt’s house, real soul food, a dancing school, full of nymphomaniacs with PhDs, Heaven.

Some of her other projects I love are: Hello Neighbors, a take on the pull tab flyer. Neighbor Door Knob Hanger, a fun way to hang and share neighborly resources...very clever. And lastly, Post-it Notes for Neighbors, Real estate revealed, and interactive installation that helps demystify the topic by inviting people to anonymously share information about their living situation.

I urge you to check her site, she's definitely got the low down on being a good neighbor and you can say she's a pretty good guerilla artist too.

Hello! It's been a way too long since my last post... you know how that goes... lately I've been teaching a few classes at Portland State University (one on Storytelling & Narrative and another for Senior Portfolio) on top of working and Portland AIGA I've gotten a little busy...good busy. Anyway, In my quest to find individuals who think about design a little differently, I came across London-based artist Daniel Eatock. He has an creative way of looking at design and approaching new work. His manifesto isn't bad either....

Begin with ideas
Embrace chance
Celebrate coincidence
Ad-lib and make things up
Eliminate superfluous elements
Subvert expectation
Make something difficult look easy
Be first or last
Believe complex ideas can produce simple things
Trust the process
Allow concepts to determine form
Reduce material and production to their essence

I really love his Holley Portraits collection. Inspired by an old friend Richard Holley who created a unique response to the creative brief in design school. Eatock took the approach and curated a collection with the goal of producing a set of self portraits that are as formally consistent as possible, yet, when studied, reveal the individuality of their authors. He invites anyone to submit their own portrait too. First enlarge your thumbprint and using ink along with your natural/everyday handwriting, compose text about yourself following the contour lines of your thumb print as a guide. The results are really beautiful and would be a great exercise to kick off branding yourself, plus it makes for lovely art.

Pictoplasma NYC Festival

Pictoplasma is a weekend conference at, Parsons The New School For Design in NYC. The festival takes place November 4 to 5 just before New York’s Illustration Week. The conference invites designers, illustrators, filmmakers and producers, fine and urban artists and character connoisseurs to gather under one roof and discourse freely about the world of character-driven art and design.

Own a Colour

Did you know that your average smart phone, tablet and computer can display 16.7 million colours?

To raise money for children's charities, the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) has launched a new campaign called, Own a Colour. Partnering with Dulux paint company they are inviting the community to purchase a colour, rename it and tell why that colour is special to you, all for just £1.

And if you need help, you can choose your colour from the 2012 International Colour Tends report or find a colour based upon a HEX #.

Pin, Circle, Stack, Tweet, Post, Blog....

Is anyone else feeling overwhelmed with all these options lately? I just went to Delcious yesterday and now you can stack your links. It's pretty cool but I just can't seem to bring myself to do all this organizing and saving in so many places. I do use Delicious all-of-the-time, it's been a great book marking tool for me.

These days I'm hooked on Pinterest ! It's so instant and when I feel like I need a little creative break I go there and troll the oh so many boards. It's devine. So much stuff to be inspired by, pinned by so many differnt people. Love it.

Sure I'm still a fan of twitter and of course blogging but it's a little overwhelming with all these different venues. I tried the iGoogle thing...haven't really posted there, but I do follow some people.

And then there's Facebook. That's a tricky place for me. I feed my blog post there from here, as well as from Modern Handmades, it's a great. I like being able to share with other's that have the same interests as me. But I also use FB to keep up with what's happening with my family and friends....however, I seldom go on there for that.. I'm sorry FB, your still in my heart.

I'm curious to know, do you have these same problems? Maybe I just need to unplug a few things? Except I just got a new iPod and that brings up a whole new set of things! ...and then there's flickr and linkedin and....geez.

Diorama Papercuts

Love this campaign by, A Friend Of Mine . The concept evolved around the theory of ‘process’ for the VCE Season of Excellence. The hand cut diorama's look awesome both in small format and the larger signage.

The identity had to translate in both a 3 dimensional and 2 dimensional environment as exhibition signage was a key consideration alongside more traditional print applications. A series of multi dimensional hand-cut dioramas were created for each field, depicting the depth of talent and process behind each event. The human element was important to capture in the visual language of the campaign to reflect the students it celebrated. Each event diorama opens as a window of action through the silhouette of an arm, reflecting the level of work the students have put in through their studies and capturing a feeling of excitement and pro-activity evident in the work and attitudes of the students.

Yuko Takada Keller designs using tracing paper and wire. The work is light, transparent and moving. Some of it is beautifully suspended and others grounded, but each piece embraces a dream-like state. It's all quite lovely.

Beautiful Type

Lodon based illustrator, and type designer Sebastian Lester is a very talented man. He has created typefaces and type illustrations for some of the world's biggest companies, publications and events, including Apple, Nike, Intel, The New York Times, The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and JD Salinger's final reissue of The Catcher in the Rye. The work is meticulous and impassioned.

His new composition, "Peace"– A limited edition screen print is “a melding of inspiration from many sources including Anglo Saxon art, 18th and 19th century virtuoso penmanship and Medieval illumination.”

One of the things that I liked about his site is his collection of found typography. He's got some great snap shots of beautiful type from buildings, books and more. I can see where some of his inspiration comes from. It's a lovely gallery.

I love street art. Sometimes it's just for the simple graphic and other times for the statement they make. Artists like Alexandre Orion and Moose have have a unique way of creating theirs. Instead adding paint to a wall, they do reverse graffiti or "green graffiti", a method of creating temporary or semi permanent images on wall by removing dirt form the surface. When they first started they were challenged by authorities, but what could they do arrest them for cleaning? Pretty cool.

JWT London created a new advertising campaign for the National Center for Domestic Violence using hands to form the typography. This is a clever concept to advocate against violence. Each part of the face looks as if the other part is being held down, making their message even more clear.

“Domestic abuse lurks beneath the veneer of society – behind closed doors – we wanted to reflect this hidden nature of the problem in the final design. With the abuser’s hands physically being the root of the problem, we concluded they were the perfect vehicle to typographically portray the solution offered by the charity.”

Filipino designer Luisa De Los Santos Robinson, a member from Movement 8 ( a consortium of Philippines' most innovative designers) has created a lovely series of hanging and floor lamps called Dragon's Tail. The sculptured lamps were created using modular paper-folding techniques resulting in beautiful reptilian like forms.

Fun with Jello..and booze!

So the building my studio (The Left Bank) is in is having a progressive party, starting at the first floor and then ending at the last floor. Luckily there is only 3 floors, but the place is filled with creatives, architects, designers and more. I'm on the 2nd floor and I share a space with an architect. The party is going to be escorted by a Pied Piper, for real. Andy, my studio partner and I decided we would do something a little different than serving beer or wine, instead I made jello shots! OK, these aren't your college days kool-aid shots in throw away cups, these are fancy shots! Awhile back I blogged about these on my other site, Modern Handmades and just had to try them.

We decided to make Cucumber Margarita shots with a Cayenne sugar dip and Blackberry Cosmo's with fresh blackberry's from my back yard and a lime zest. They both came out sooo good! I can't believe how easy they were to make too. I'm no food stylist, but I think they look pretty so I just had to share, and I needed to stop myself from eating too many shots before the party..ha ha! I got the recipes from this great site called, Jelly Shots Test Kitchen. If your looking for something with a little WOW factor for your next party, I would considering maken' shots!

I've been on and off holiday all month. Just back from San Francisco were I stayed with two of the most hippest seniors ever in their lovely Victorian within the Mission District. My gracious host gave me a wonderful book of patterns by designer Orla Kiely called, Pattern. It's so awesome and filled with wonderful inspiration and insight to her style and creative process.

"Orla looks at pattern in all its manifestations – the impact of scale and proportion, rhythm and texture and the all-important dimension of colour. "

Inspired by her work, I visited her site today and now must own something from her new fall/winter collection. Her simple pallet and modern patterns had me drooling. Grey being my number one color of choice I loved everything! Even if your not a girl, you will enjoy her book for the graphic modern style!

Love the headband! I think I need to knit a few of these, so popular this season!

Designed by french artist Julie Gauthron, Hotel Le Crayon is a new and funky hotel opening in Paris (2011) that caters to the creative soul. I'm loving the concept of it! The vibrant colors mixed with vintage furniture and graphic wallpapers look make for a charming combination. I need to visit Paris one day, this looks like a great place to stay!

There are some great free photo apps out there for your phone and iPad. Pop Booth is a new one that lets you create photo strips from your photo's and send to friends, post on facebook, or even get them in the mail for a mere $2.99. It also has a few filters as well. I don't know if they are as cool as my Hipstamatic but the strips are fun...I'm sure we'll be seeing lots of these photo's soon enough!

Tokyo artist Sagaki Keita has doodling down to the minute detail. With period art as his inspiration he transforms and re-interpreters the original images to create worlds within the worlds. It must take him months to complete a piece. Not only is the detail outrageous but the final piece appear very similar to the originals, and all done with just a pen. Awesome!

Canadian artist Laura Bifano has illustrated a fun animal series titled, "Menagerie". The polygonal paintings were inspired by her love for nature and classic video games. WOW! These are amazing! Artist Dalton Ghetti creates these masterpieces from the leads (and on the tips) of pencils. Taking about two-and-a-half years each piece is crafted on the graphite of a pencil without the aid of a magnifying glass.

Waste Landscape

Architect Clémence Eliard and artist Elise Morin created Waste Landscape, "A Sea of Metallic Dunes". The installation, composed of 65,000 CD's were hand-sew together then laid over inflatable mounds to take over 1000 square meters in the Centquatre art space (Paris), and will will be on display from July 21st to September 10.

It's awesome that they used unsold cd's to create this sweeping landscape. It really is quite beautiful and must be even more grandeur up close. Eventually the CD's will be recycled.

Visual artist Carine Khalifé uses the technique of painting on glass with oil paints and Stop Motion Pro to animate the video Blown Minded by Young Galaxy.

"Basically, my technique was to paint on a piece of glass fixed to a light box. I would paint on the glass with oil so that it wouldn't dry, and I could play with it for hours.
A camera, fixed overhead above the animation table and plugged in my computer, would capture my paintings frame by frame. The single light source came from beneath the glass, revealing the textures and details of brushes movements. The more paint, the darker the image, and therefore the animation becomes about gesture, and the texture of brushstrokes; it's a very physical, organic process."

The process and technique for the animation work is pretty awesome!

My little finds yesterday

I was at the Last Thursday on Alberta last night and found two things I just love.

One is a super sweet little book necklace created by Locket 2 You. It's a hand bound mini leather book with a vintage style key attached. I thought how cool would it be to have artist friends draw in it, write a few of my wishes, or have some little love notes sprinkled throughout. So sweet.

The other was a mini illustration by artist Yo Mutsu. It's a woman super hero silk screening. I thought it was such a sweet illustration. Plus nothing like pull'n the squeegee! Yo will be Showing at the Love Craft, a horror themed tea shop and bar located in Portland, OR on August 5th.

Paper Folding for Designers

Paul Jackson's book, Folding Techniques for Designers From Sheet to Form is pretty cool. This 224 page book is filled with step-by-step instructions and lots of photo's and illustrations demonstrating his techniques, plus it comes with a CD.
Dezeen has featured a few of his video's and is also holding a competition where you could win the book (closes August 9th). I enjoyed watching his crumpling paper video, you could make some nice lampshades with that one. And yes, there is an art to crumpling paper! The book seems like a pretty good add to the ole library.

He has taught the techniques of folding on more than 150 university-level design courses in the UK, Germany, Belgium, the US, Canada and Israel. I think it's awesome when artist bring unexpected beauty to the world around us. Artist Juliana Santacruz Herrera uses braided fabric to do just that. Her project, Visual Intervention is set against an urban backdrop of broken sidewalks and potholes throughout the city of Paris. Some of the compositions have such a lovely form, providing a nice contrast of bright and cheery against the grey backdrop. I love when the grass grows into the pieces too.

There are a lot of changes coming soon for Cre8tivegirl! First off I finally bought the domain name creativegirl.com (yes spelled correctly) from a squatter who has had it forever, ugh! I started using the nickname cre8tivegirl so long ago, it was different and had my favorite number, but I was young. It's not really a optimized search name and it's not spelled right! Anyway, I'm going to be changing it over with the new site and blog launch coming soon. I'll still be using the user name Cre8tivegirl throughout my social networks (twitter, etc).

Changes for the blog... OK, I am a little tech savvy but sometimes playing in the back end of blogging can be frustrating. I've realized my limitations, so I'm hiring someone to help me get this blog to a more robust site. I've been on Blogger since 2005 it's been working for me so far but...

I've decided that I will be moving to Wordpress soon. I'm sure that will bring another set of learning's and frustrations! So stay tuned for the new blog with more bells and whistles...well maybe not that much. I'll still be writing about the same things and be bringing more value to the content. Baby steps first.

Paper Dresses

Designers, Ayumi Morita; Grace Insogna; Hoi Yi Li created these paper dresses first for the Designer Pages event in June and now are being exhibited by The Wrapping Project a center for arts located in East London.

"The five paper dresses were commissioned especially for the Designer Pages event, part of the Earl’s Court Festival 2011. The commission required the entrant to design and fabricate a dress entirely from the pages of magazines donated by the publishers. The garments were exhibited on mannequins at Gallery 286, a private gallery situated in a Victorian townhouse in Earl’s Court. The event provided a platform for the joint exhibition of contemporary art and fashion."

The paper dresses will be on show from 11 July to 1 August 2011 at The Wapping Project, Wapping Hydraulic Power Station, London E1W 3SG.

Pencil shaving art

I have always admired the work of UK artist Kyle Bean. He's an art director, modeler and set designer with a wonderful perspective on design and a very imaginable mind. His latest work created for Wallpaper* is no exception. Using different colored pencil shavings, he's created several portraits to be used in their upcoming Handmade Issue. They're really fun and look great!

3D Band Poster

This is definitely a unique band poster. London band Dry the River had these pop out posters created by designers Phil Clandilon and Steve Milbourne to promote their next gigs. Using Google Sketchup, huge horse bust templates were created then silkscreened and hand assembled. Pretty cool and very effective. I love the stark white horses against the colorful graffiti walls.

William Joyce and Moonbot Studios created, The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, an immersive animated ibook. The illustrations are awesome and I love that it's intuitive with it's animation. They also created an interactive book-app around the story and a standalone animated film which you can get on apple apps. Check out the movie trailer here too!

Zim and Zou Paper Wonders

I love the work this French duo, Lucia Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann of Zim &Zou. Their projects are fresh and different with a contemporary approach to graphic design utilizing paper sculpture. Their latest work, Back to Basics is a brightly colored retro scene of camera's, cell phones and tape decks. It took them a year to get this to come to life and their still working on it! They have done some really great work, check em out!

Wow! is all I can say to describe the work of Los Angeles based artist, Elsa Mora. She does wonderfully detailed papercuts. When I first saw her work, Frida Kahlo came to mind. All of her work is done by hand and she sells them in her shop too. I love the 3D rings and the stark white pieces with little bits of red. So very beautiful. Bravo Elsa!

Birds & Butterflies

I'm in the mood for a little quite after last night :). Don't get me wrong, it was a great celebration but today I feel somber and these beautiful birds and butterflies by Paul Villinski is just the treat I needed.

By re-purposing discarded material Villinski's artwork truly transforms. Inspired by sailplanes and paragliders, metaphors of flight and soaring often appear in his work.

His butterflies are created from crushed beer cans and each piece seems to have a personality of it's own. I love the cobalt blue series and the vinyl lp butterflies are wonderful.

These are really wonderful pieces by Toronto based artist and designer Dave Murray. Of course they're inspired by the beers he drinks but also by the 20th century art movement, Cubism.

Worlds first ever 3D Fashion Show

Like out of some sci-fi fantasy (which I love) designer Tim Jockel created a fashion show for the German haute couture fashion label Stefan Eckert and did it using only three-dimensional hologram technology. Viewing the show must have been like seeing a live (or not so live) play/dance/fashion story unfolding.

Working alongside director Florian Sigl, Jockel captured the content using a high-speed camera, creating the 3D motion graphics and compiling it all in post-production.

" The result was one of the biggest holographic projections ever which creates a complete optical illusion and breaks the rules of time and space on stage. "

The work of Maricor Maricar takes a delightful approach to graphic design. Utilizing embroidery they have made video's, posters and other works of art to convey their objective. I love the typographical work, so detailed and lovely.

Director Ned Wenlock created Apache, a sweet video for the band Danger Beach. Based on the concept of traveling, the little Indian using various modes of old fashion transportation and finds himself getting swallowed up by the modern city.
"The spinning environment came out of a need to find an interesting way to show this. "
As the art style maybe simple, the rotating environment does not appear to be, yet it all works so wonderfully smooth together. It's very lovely and well executed. Read more about his techniques on his blog.

Using a hand-plotter she cuts through multiple sheets to create dimensional layered works. The white paper impacts the final designs and results in beautiful sculpted typography.

Oh geez, I heart this site! Scott Bedford of What I Made, has an awesome site! I love all of his illustrations and how to's, and his use of recycling or upycling. Even if you don't have any kids, you'll appreciate his fun projects and illustrative tuturials. I personally love the fork egg holder, it reminds me of my late Grandma Archibald, we used to eat our eggs out of the most prescious holders...

Moss graffiti has been around for a while, but one artist who's work really embodies it is Anna Garforth. Her experimentation's in typography has resulted in an array of unique and beautiful pieces, and the body of work is both natural and exploratory. Whether she is painting on a wall with moss, wrapping a fence in masking tape or reusing materials to create public art you will be inspired by the creativity she puts into each piece. This is truly sustainable art.

Typographic Illusions

Really impressed with this installation by the young design student Joseph Egan out of London. By looking at the relationship between graphic design and architecture they discovered the process of anamorphosis (a distorted projection or perspective requiring the viewer to use special devices to reconstitute an image.) Initially inspired by the fine artist Felice Varini (who in himself does wonderful work) his team created a typographic installation within a building on the campus of Chelsea College of Art & Design.

"Our work encourages the viewer to walk into and around typography, an immersive experience considering that their usual relationship with type would normally be realised on a two dimensional surface be it printed or computerised. Being able to appreciate it physically painted onto walls of buildings which the viewers are used to interacting with every day draws attention to the beauty of typography and at same time highlighting the architectural forms that it adorns."

Noma Bar is an illustrator who relies on negative space to convey his subject matter, he is a master at it. These illustrations for IBM's Smarter Planet are just another example of how a simple solution can communicate complex ideas. Nice.

I made these paper roses for a web banner for the infamous Pioneer Woman. I create her banners every month and this month I wanted to do something a little more up my paper craft alley :) They are really easy and fun to make and look so sweet on branches!
