The counterfiet crochet project & Stephanie Syjuco

STEPHANIE SYJUCO is a visual artist who’s recent work uses the tactics of bootlegging, reappropriation, and fictional fabrications to address issues of cultural biography, labor, and economic globalization. Working primarily in sculpture and installation, her objects mistranslate and misappropriate iconic symbols, creating frictions between high ideals and everyday materials.

She's done some great work, I particularly like the counterfiet crochet project she started. She got participants to "troll the internet and choose a design that they particularly covet, working off of low-resolution jpgs which they download. The final results may or may not bear resemblance to the originals, which is an interesting part of the "translation."

Here are some of the hand-counterfeiting designer handbags: Fendi, Gucci, Chanel, Prada, etc. that were part of an instillation she has shown on exhibit.
